On Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 19:00, the bookstore «Mikroi Galaxies» in Monemvasia invites the public to a significant event at the café «Koulouraki.» This gathering will feature a presentation and discussion centered around the short story collection by Ghassan Kanafani, titled «Short Stories – From the Land of Bitter Oranges,» published by Salto Editions.
The event will host notable speakers, including Mr. Nasim Alatras, a journalist, author, and translator of Kanafani’s work, and Ms. Maria Kountouri, a philologist and director of the General Lyceum of Monemvasia. Following the presentations, there will be an engaging discussion with the audience, providing an opportunity for deeper exploration of the themes presented in Kanafani’s writing.
Ghassan Kanafani was not only a celebrated author but also a teacher, journalist, painter, and representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). His legacy in the Arab world is profound, as he is recognized for intertwining personal narratives with political discourse. Edward Said regarded him as «one of the most creative forces in Palestinian culture,» highlighting his ability to challenge colonial narratives through what he termed «contrapuntal reading.» The book features twenty of Kanafani’s sixty-four short stories, showcasing his unique voice and perspective.
Kanafani’s prose is described as a form of resistance; his stories transcend mere storytelling, serving as provocative acts against erasure. He was not just a writer but an intellectual warrior who understood that culture is a battleground. As Ilan Pappe noted, Kanafani’s writings on exile were not merely literary expressions but political statements. His ability to give voice to the marginalized and his understanding of memory as a form of resistance made him a target, ultimately leading to his assassination.
Kanafani’s influence on Palestinian literature is profound, with Elias Khoury stating that he represents the foundations of this literary tradition and serves as a mentor to many. This event promises to be a significant occasion for those interested in literature, politics, and the ongoing narrative of Palestinian identity.
