The Eastern Mani Municipality and the General Lyceum of Gythio invite you to a significant event celebrating the life and contributions of the distinguished Gythian professor and academic, Ioannis N. Xanthakis. This event, titled “Ioannis Xanthakis: A Pioneer in the Science of Astronomy,” is set to take place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Cultural Center of the Eastern Mani Municipality.
The evening will feature esteemed speakers, including:
- Georgia Xanthaki-Karamano, Honorary Professor at the University of the Peloponnese and President of the Society of Greek Philologists.
- Dimitris Panagiotopoulos, PhD in History and author of the biography.
- Andreas I. Karamanos, Academic and former Rector.
Additionally, excerpts from the biography will be read by Eleni Xanthakou, a philologist (MA). The event will be moderated by Pavlos Kouzounas, MSc, Director of the General Lyceum of Gythio.
A Glimpse into Ioannis Xanthakis
Academician Ioannis Xanthakis is recognized as a pioneer in the field of Astronomy. His significant scientific work primarily focuses on solar physics and the interactions between solar and terrestrial phenomena, earning him widespread international acclaim. He played a crucial role in the Academy of Athens, serving as its President in 1964, and was the founder of the Center for Research in Astronomy and Applied Mathematics. For three decades, he was the Secretary of Publications and a member of the Senate. Moreover, he held the position of Minister of Agriculture in caretaker governments and presided over numerous scientific societies and charitable organizations.
