The alarming issue of coastal erosion at Xifia Beach in Monemvasia has resurfaced, drawing attention once again to a phenomenon that poses significant risks to the area. This concern was recently highlighted by Manolis Makaris, a Regional Councilor and leader of the «Peloponnese First» party, in his inquiry directed at the Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia.
Makaris previously addressed this pressing matter during a visit to the beach last July, where he witnessed firsthand the severe erosion that has been affecting the coastline for years, resulting in the loss of dozens of meters of beach.
In his recent inquiry, Makaris noted the extensive and accelerating erosion of the coastline, which has serious implications for the natural environment, the social fabric, and the local tourism potential. This issue has been scientifically documented in a preliminary study conducted by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE) in September 2024, which revealed alarming statistics:
– The coastline has receded by an average of 30 meters from 1945 to 2023.
– A staggering 69% of the original beach area has been lost.
– Erosion has accelerated between 2008 and 2014, indicating the severity of the situation.
– A primary cause may be the construction of a coastal concrete road that disrupted the natural sediment supply.
– Damage to infrastructure, loss of land, disappearance of coastal vegetation, and alteration of the natural landscape have already occurred.
It is noteworthy that a budget of €16 million is available for the protection and restoration of coastal areas. It is inconceivable that Xifia Beach, where the problem is thoroughly documented, the local community is actively engaged, and the area possesses significant natural and tourism potential, is not prioritized for immediate action.
In his inquiry, Makaris posed several critical questions to the Regional Authority:
1. What actions will be taken to develop a specialized restoration study for Xifia Beach in collaboration with ELKETHE?
2. Will a specific amount from the available €16 million be allocated for the necessary projects?
3. Does the Region intend to implement temporary protective measures to slow down erosion until the study is completed?
4. Will there be coordination with the Municipality of Monemvasia, the Ministry of Environment, the OFYPEKA, and ELKETHE for a comprehensive intervention strategy?
5. How will the active participation of the local community be ensured in the planning and monitoring of interventions?
Xifia Beach is a unique landscape of natural and cultural value that should not be left to the ravages of time. Immediate mobilization from the Region, effective use of available resources, and the application of scientifically backed solutions are essential before the loss becomes irreversible.
