On October 11 and 12, 2025, an expanded meeting of the Board of Directors of the Peloponnese Federation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (POEE) took place at the Chamber of Commerce in Messinia and the offices of the Commercial Association of Kalamata. These meetings serve primarily as informative sessions aimed at identifying local issues and fostering collaboration to create a stronger advocacy framework for their resolution.
The discussions initially focused on challenges facing the commercial sector in Kalamata and the wider Messinia region. Key topics included infrastructure deficiencies, demographic concerns, and delays in urban development projects in Kalamata, all of which negatively impact commercial activity. The necessity for more effective consultation between the Municipality of Kalamata and the local Commercial Association was also emphasized.
Particular attention was given to regional ESPA programs, which, as noted, do not adequately meet the needs of small businesses. It was highlighted that the Peloponnese Region must take a more active role in supporting local entrepreneurship, not only by creating specialized funding tools for small enterprises but also by establishing a permanent consultation mechanism with local stakeholders. Small businesses were recognized as the backbone of the local economy, helping to retain the population and acting as a buffer against demographic challenges.
The meeting also evaluated the Prime Minister’s announcements at the 2025 Thessaloniki International Fair, concluding that they do not effectively address the needs of small businesses. Proposals were made to tackle overdue debts to social security funds and the tax authorities, and the Federation’s advocacy framework for reducing taxes on small enterprises was established.
The proposed labor legislation was analyzed, with a consensus that it is moving in the right direction regarding worker protection and supporting businesses in their developmental journey.
The meeting resolved to intensify efforts to establish an untouchable bank account for businesses and to arrange for long-term debt repayment plans that eliminate excessive surcharges.
Finally, the POEE’s proposal to include the connection of tourist cities in Eastern Peloponnese in the advocacy framework was approved as a measure to enhance local development.
The meeting was honored by the presence of Messinia MPs, local council members, and representatives from various commercial associations across the region, highlighting the collaborative spirit and commitment to addressing the pressing issues faced by local businesses.
