In a significant development for the local community, the Deputy Minister of National Defense and MP for Laconia, Thanasis Davakis, has announced the completion of restoration and maintenance work on the Prophet Elijah chapel, located at the summit of Taygetus Mountain. This initiative is part of the Armed Forces’ commitment to social contribution towards local communities.
In his statement, Davakis emphasized the importance of the Prophet Elijah chapel, describing it as more than just a small church; it stands as a living symbol of the historical and spiritual identity of the Laconians. Situated at a breathtaking vantage point on the mountain, the chapel embodies the faith, resilience, and natural essence of the Dorian identity that has characterized the inhabitants of this region for centuries.
The restoration of this sacred site is viewed as a gesture of respect for the inherent religious sentiments, the unparalleled natural environment, and the grandeur of the «masculine mountain.» It highlights the value that the Laconians place on preserving their sacred places, reinforcing their sense of identity and pride.
Davakis expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Armed Forces for their support, noting that beyond their primary mission, they have once again demonstrated their commitment to the local community by significantly contributing to the preservation of cultural and religious heritage. He also pointed out that the Prophet Elijah is the patron saint of the Army Aviation.
Special thanks were extended to General G. Kostidis, Chief of the Army General Staff, Major General M. Klouvas, Commander of the Construction and Natural Disaster Response Administration, and the dedicated personnel who worked under challenging conditions to achieve this successful outcome.
This restoration not only revitalizes a cherished landmark but also strengthens the bonds between the Armed Forces and the local populace, ensuring that the rich cultural legacy of the region continues to thrive.
