In a moment of profound emotion and pride, the Municipality of Eurotas has officially recognized the community of Saint Demetrius Zaracos as a Martyr Village. This designation comes following Presidential Decree No. 71/2025, published in Government Gazette A’ 146 on August 8, 2025.
This historic decision serves as a tribute to the memories of the residents who sacrificed and suffered during the Occupation on June 4, 1944, while defending their freedom and homeland. It also highlights the long-standing and coordinated efforts by the Municipal Authority, in close cooperation with the local community, to acknowledge and preserve this significant historical heritage.
The Municipality of Eurotas extends heartfelt gratitude to those who contributed to this acknowledgement, including President Konstantinos Tasoulas for signing the decree, Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios for his role in completing administrative processes, and Laconian MP Neoklis Kritikos for his persistent support of this initiative. They also express thanks to the Mayor of Kalavryta and President of the Network of Martyr Cities and Villages of Greece for the years 1940-1945, Athanasios Papadopoulos, and to Nikos Janakos, who conducted the research and documentation necessary for the village’s recognition as a Martyr Village.
Mayor of Eurotas, Dimos Verdos, remarked that the recognition of Saint Demetrius Zaracos as a Martyr Village is not merely a formal inscription in the Government Gazette. It represents a moral obligation to our ancestors and a legacy for future generations. The municipality is committed to continue honoring the memory of the victims and ensuring that this chapter of history remains alive.
As this recognition paves the way for further historical awareness and understanding, it strengthens the community’s identity and pride, securing a legacy that will resonate with both current residents and generations to come.
