On Sunday, October 19, the Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Molai & Southeastern Laconia (E.O.S. M.N.A.L.) is organizing a hiking excursion in Taygetus, specifically along the route from the Holy Monastery of Golas to the village of Koumoustas.
The hike will commence at the Holy Monastery of Golas, which is perched on the slopes of Taygetus at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters. This stunning location is surrounded by chestnut trees, pines, and firs, captivating visitors with both its natural beauty and historical significance. During the Ottoman period, the monastery played a crucial role in supporting education in the region. Its remarkable 17th-century frescoes, created by renowned iconographers, are true artistic treasures. Dominating the dome of the church is the figure of the Pantocrator, while the narthex features unique illustrations of ancient Greek philosophers such as Homer, Aristotle, and Plato.
From the monastery, participants will descend towards the medieval village of Koumoustas, situated at an elevation of 750 meters within the Anakoilos gorge. Here, the stone buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, along with Byzantine churches (including Agios Konstantinos, Prophet Elias, Panaitsa, Agios Panteleimon, and Agios Dimitrios) and traditional marble fountains, transport visitors to another era. Koumoustas thrived during Byzantine times and actively participated in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Today, the village has very few residents but keeps its historical memory alive.
Participants are advised to bring along hiking boots, a hat, a headlamp, sunglasses, a backpack with personal items, at least one liter of water, energy snacks (such as nuts and energy bars), and a good spirit of camaraderie.
Meeting Point: Afoi Panagiotopoulos (old) in Molai at 8:00 AM. Transportation will be by car.
Those interested in participating must contact the coordinators by phone no later than Saturday, October 18, at noon.
Coordinators: Georgios Sakkaris, 6942937616 – Dimitris-Mironas Liaros, 6938426877.
