On October 28, 1940, a significant historical event is commemorated in Greece, and this year, the celebration in the picturesque town of Monemvasia was marked by exceptional splendor and beautiful weather. The day began with a solemn service at the Church of Saint Leontios, where a doxology was held, followed by an inspiring speech delivered by Sotiria Tsouni, a philologist specializing in special education at the local secondary school, «Giannis Ritsos.»
The festivities continued with a vibrant parade featuring students from the local elementary school, junior high, and high school, accompanied by the sounds of the Municipal Philharmonic of Monemvasia. The town, adorned with festive decorations, witnessed the enthusiastic participation of the youth, who conveyed a powerful message of unity and optimism.
Later, at the Monemvasia Castle, a memorial service took place in the square of the Holy Christ, where wreaths were laid, and a moment of silence was observed in honor of the glorious fallen. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem, encapsulating the spirit of remembrance and gratitude.
This year’s commemoration of October 28 serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience of the Greek people. The message resonates clearly: «United, the Greeks can turn the impossible into the possible. They possess the strength to say NO to anything that insults and threatens to distort the values and ideals for which our ancestors sacrificed their lives.»
Photographs capturing these moments were taken by Nektarios Mastoropoulos, showcasing the pride and spirit of the community during this significant occasion.
