In an important initiative aimed at safeguarding vital aquatic ecosystems, the company OikoM Environmental Consulting and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETH) are collaborating on a project titled “Conservation Actions for Supporting the Threatened Freshwater Fish of EvrOtas River” (CASTOR). To promote awareness and community involvement, they will host an informative event on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Meeting Room on the first floor of the Regional Unit of Laconia in Sparta.
The primary goal of the CASTOR project is to enhance conservation efforts and ensure the long-term survival of two critically endangered endemic freshwater species, Pelasgus laconicus and Squalius keadicus, within the EvrOtas River basin. Through targeted habitat restoration, in situ population movements and ex situ breeding programs, and the management of invasive species, the project aims to restore ecological integrity and promote sustainable water management practices in the river basin. This initiative is also crucial for the overall maintenance of Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems.
The event hopes to engage the local community actively to ensure multiplier effects throughout the region. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the project’s objectives and contribute to the conservation of these remarkable fish species.
The duration of the CASTOR project is set to be three years, beginning in September 2025 and concluding in August 2028. For more detailed information about the project and its goals, further resources are available online at CASTOR Project.
Join this initiative to be part of a significant step towards the preservation of our natural heritage. Your participation can make a difference!
