On the Monday following Thomas Sunday, the local church celebrated with great splendor and reverence the feast of the patroness of Monemvasia, the Virgin Mary Chrysafitissa, at her namesake church within the Castle of Monemvasia. The festivities began on Sunday, April 19, 2025, with a grand Vespers service led by His Eminence Metropolitan Epiphanius of Mantineia and Kynouria, who was invited by the local Metropolitan, His Eminence Eustathius.
Following the blessing of the loaves, the esteemed shepherd of the community spoke about the historical significance of the Virgin Mary Chrysafitissa, expressing heartfelt gratitude to Metropolitan Epiphanius and highlighting his impactful contributions to the Church of Greece. In his sermon, Metropolitan Epiphanius emphasized the teachings of the Virgin Mary, focusing on faith, humility, silence, and her suffering, encouraging the congregation to draw strength from her and the Holy Trinity.
On Monday, April 20, 2025, the celebrations continued with the Orthros service, presided over by His Grace Bishop Theophilus of Lakedaimonia, followed by a festive Divine Liturgy led by Metropolitan Eustathius, with the participation of Metropolitan Epiphanius. The Bishop of Lakedaimonia delivered a profound message, noting that the Virgin Mary serves as a living maternal presence in our lives, bridging Heaven and Earth and guiding us on our spiritual journey.
The procession of the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary Chrysafitissa around the square was a highlight of the day, where Metropolitan Eustathius blessed the multitude of faithful present. After the procession, a prayer was offered for the protection of the Christians in this blessed region.
Concluding the festive Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Eustathius expressed gratitude to God for allowing the celebration to take place in a joyful atmosphere. He acknowledged the presence of Metropolitan Epiphanius, Bishop Theophilus, clergy, local officials, security forces, and the devoted community members who participated wholeheartedly in both liturgical gatherings.
The event was further enhanced by the beautiful decorations provided by the Municipality of Monemvasia and the excellent performance of the local Philharmonic. Additionally, it was announced that the parish of Monemvasia would now also be served by Archimandrite Leonidas Vardakis, alongside the esteemed Protopresbyter George Kambras.
The celebration was attended by various dignitaries, including mayors from surrounding regions, regional and local government officials, and representatives from various organizations, all coming together to honor the Virgin Mary Chrysafitissa and the rich traditions of the community.
