On April 29, 2026, a significant protest took place in front of the ELTA branch in Monemvasia, drawing the attention of local citizens concerned about the impending closure of this vital service. The demonstration, which commenced at noon, was fueled by widespread anxiety regarding the potential loss of the postal office, a situation that has sparked considerable unrest in the surrounding area.
According to reports, 1,171 individuals from Monemvasia and its vicinity have signed a petition advocating for the continuation of the ELTA branch. The absence of this facility is seen as a further blow to the already struggling rural communities in Greece. Gerasimos Koutsandreas, president of the Nomian Cultural Association, expressed the collective concern of the community, stating, “The ELTA office serves as a crucial pillar for the region, providing essential weekly postal services to residents.”
Koutsandreas emphasized the fundamental obligation of the state to ensure equal access to essential services, particularly in remote and rural areas. He called for the immediate reversal of the decision to close the Monemvasia ELTA branch, insisting on its preservation as a fully operational public service.
In a letter addressed to the Municipality of Monemvasia, employees Maria Kourkoulis and Christina Lekka echoed these sentiments, voicing their strong opposition to the closure. They highlighted the necessity of the ELTA office for daily activities, including financial transactions, bill payments, and postal services. They also pointed out that banking services currently provided through Eurobank in Monemvasia would be relocated to the ELTA branch in Molai, forcing residents to travel considerable distances for essential services.
To prevent the closure, the employees proposed several solutions to the Municipality of Monemvasia, including:
1. Allocating suitable municipal space for the ELTA office.
2. The municipality covering the rent of the existing office to ensure its continued operation.
In a related development, the Monemvasia Community Council convened an open meeting to discuss the impending closure of the ELTA branch. The council unanimously decided to seek institutional intervention to secure comprehensive postal services in the area. They stated, “This mobilization reflects the clear will of the local community to maintain a physical postal presence, highlighting that this issue is not merely an administrative change but a genuine need for residents, businesses, and surrounding settlements.”
The council further clarified that while they cannot dictate the operational methods of ELTA, they must advocate against any disruption or degradation of postal access in the region. They stressed the importance of ensuring equitable, reliable access to essential postal services for all community members, including residents, the elderly, professionals, and visitors.
The Monemvasia Community Council has urged the Municipality to explore potential institutional solutions for maintaining a full postal presence, such as providing appropriate municipal space or other legal forms of support. They concluded by stating, “Before considering the closure or replacement of the office with a downgraded service, all legal alternatives must be thoroughly examined.”
