Recently, a significant development took place in the Eastern Mani municipality, as the Deputy Minister of National Defense, Thanasis Davakis, signed the file for the transfer of part of the former Mantouvalos military camp to the local government. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the community of Gytheio, as it aims to enhance local resources and infrastructure.
In his statement, Deputy Minister Davakis emphasized the benefits this transfer will bring to the municipality. He noted, «The Mantouvalos camp in Gytheio is being utilized for the benefit of the Eastern Mani municipality.» This initiative is expected to be finalized by the end of May 2026, indicating a clear timeline for the completion of this project.
The agreement between the Ministry of National Defense and the Eastern Mani municipality is designed to ensure that the transfer is advantageous not only for the local community but also for the Armed Forces. Specifically, the municipality will take on the responsibility of urban planning for the portion of the Mantouvalos camp that remains under military control. This strategic move aims to increase the overall value of the property, aligning it with the value of the section being transferred.
Deputy Minister Davakis expressed gratitude towards the Mayor of Eastern Mani, Petros Andreakos, and his team for their exceptional collaboration throughout this process, which began with their first meeting on April 28, 2025. He also acknowledged the support of the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, for positively addressing the municipality’s request from the outset.
As the project moves forward, efforts are being coordinated to ensure that the final stages of the transfer are completed promptly, paving the way for a new chapter in the development of Gytheio and its surrounding areas. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to local governance but also highlights the importance of collaboration between military and civilian entities for the benefit of the community.
