Severe damages have been reported on the bridge leading to the Castle of Monemvasia, a crucial structure connecting the settlement of “Bridge” with the historic castle city. This cement construction is currently the only access to this historical site.
Built from reinforced concrete, the bridge spans a length of 8.80 meters and has a roadway width of 7.20 meters. Its proximity to the sea has led to significant wear and tear, which directly affects its safety and structural integrity.
Photographs reveal the extensive corrosion phenomena affecting the bridge’s reinforcement. Large sections of concrete have detached, further damaging the reinforcement in both the beams and the slab. These issues have reduced the bridge’s load-bearing capacity, categorizing it as structurally unsafe, especially given that heavy vehicles traverse it regularly.
Reports indicate that the problems with the bridge have been known since at least March 2019 by both municipal and regional authorities. However, no actions have been taken to address these concerns since that time.
Once again, a call to action is being made to relevant authorities. The Municipality of Monemvasia and the Peloponnese Region are urged to collaborate urgently to reinforce and eventually replace the already compromised bridge leading to the Castle of Monemvasia before it becomes too late.
