The beloved festival of Leonidio is set to return for its 14th year, running from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, with a thematic focus on «Communities.» This year, the festival will explore the various forms of collectiveness, examining how communities are formed, transformed, and maintained in a world characterized by continuous mobility and change.
Mobility and renewal are intrinsic elements of any vibrant community. In this spirit, Melitzazz enters a new era under a newly appointed three-member organizing team. After thirteen years of dedication, founder and artistic director Sotiris Bolis will pass the baton to Maria Kantani, Sofi Moutafi, and Christos Chrysanthopoulos.
This year’s program is organized into six distinct sections:
- Pop-up concerts: Town squares and streets will come alive with the sounds of unique bands and artists.
- Photography Exhibition «Communities»: Photographers are invited to explore concepts such as belonging, collective memory, and the connection between individuals and their locales.
- Contemporary Art Exhibition «Encounters»: Three artists will engage with the space through the personal memories of locals and the archival wealth of indigenous communities.
- In Nature: This theme intersects with the notion of «Commons.» The inclusion of the Biosphere Reserve of Mount Parnon–Cape Maleas in the UNESCO Global Network (2025) aligns closely with this idea.
- Cine Melitzazz: Each evening, under the clear skies of Leonidio, the seventh art will create its own community of viewers. The 2026 screening program will be enriched by a collaboration with the International Short Film Festival of Drama.
- Melitzazz KIDS: Climbing walls, environmental education workshops, birdwatching, children’s theater, and films at the outdoor cinema will offer a rich program tailored for young visitors.
Additionally, a Bonus Project: HUNT THE STAMP will feature 15 visual artists, each creating an original stamp dedicated to a village in Southern Kynouria. Each stamp will be placed at a notable location, such as a café, church, or community office. Visitors are encouraged to search for these stamps, mark their personal «passport,» and collect a unique set of art pieces throughout their journey.
The organizers emphasize:
“Through modern artistic, educational, participatory, and site-specific actions, Melitzazz activates the audience and invites them to participate in shaping a shared experience. For us, community transcends the boundaries of a static image over time and forms a dynamic process of meeting, dialogue, and collaboration. In this context, the festival reassesses its role as an open cultural platform that brings together places, people, and ideas, creating connections between the local and the broader context.”
This year’s event is brought to life in collaboration with the Municipality of Southern Kynouria, the Region of Peloponnese, the Development Organization of Parnon, and the NPO «Little Mediterranean Stories.»
