Breathtaking Beaches of Monemvasia Awarded Blue Flag for 2026
Monemvasia’s stunning beaches are once again in the spotlight, as seven of them have been honored with the prestigious Blue Flag award for 2026. Among these is the renowned beach of Poros, alongside other beautiful spots that exemplify the region’s commitment to environmental quality and sustainability.
The Blue Flag is recognized worldwide as an emblem of excellence in ecological standards, awarded only to beaches and marinas that meet strict criteria set for water quality, safety, and environmental management. This symbol of distinction has been in place since 1987, emphasizing that only those beaches with «Excellent» water quality can be designated as a Blue Flag recipient. Notably, any rating below this, such as «Good,» is not acceptable under the program’s guidelines.
The beaches in Monemvasia that have achieved this international certification include:
- Monemvasia Beach (D.E. Monemvasia),
- Poros (D.E. Monemvasia),
- Neapolis (D.E. Voion),
- Archangelos (D.E. Asopou),
- Plytra – Pachiammas (D.E. Asopou),
- Tigania (D.E. Molaoon), and
- Megali Ammos – Kyparissi (D.E. Zaraka).
While these accolades signify exceptional quality, it is crucial to highlight that receiving a Blue Flag is merely a first step towards guaranteeing the beaches’ effective management and the optimal experience for visitors. The award does not ensure that the beaches will automatically attract the necessary traffic beneficial to the local community. To truly capitalize on this recognition, a well-coordinated approach involving local governance, community organizations, and volunteers is essential. Their engagement will be vital in maintaining cleanliness, safety, and overall visitor satisfaction, thereby amplifying the award’s positive impact on the local economy and environment.
As Monemvasia continues to shine brightly on the map of premier beach destinations, the community is urged to embrace these honors as a foundation for ongoing improvement and stewardship of their valued coastal treasures.
