In a significant development, the Union of Entrepreneurs in Monemvasia has turned its attention to the companies managing intellectual and related rights. In early 2026, these companies sent payment notifications to various establishments, including restaurants and hotels, demanding exorbitant sums for the use of music on their premises.
The amounts requested have raised eyebrows, as highlighted in a recent announcement: “These charges are certified unchecked, without any justification, varying disproportionately from one business to another, adding yet another burden to an already struggling economic reality.”
The Union pointed out a troubling history, referencing the scandal involving the Greek Collective Management Organization (AEPI), which quickly faded from public scrutiny, leaving behind a deficit of 42 million euros—funds that have yet to be distributed to rightful beneficiaries. The Union has called upon all relevant authorities, political figures, and higher union bodies to support the business community in this challenging time.
To illustrate the absurdity of the situation, the announcement provided several examples of the amounts demanded from local businesses by the rights management companies:

Amount: €2,736.80A hotel in Monemvasia:

These figures not only highlight the financial strain on local businesses but also raise questions about the fairness and transparency of the charges imposed by these rights management entities. The Union’s call for action underscores the need for a collective response to safeguard the interests of entrepreneurs in the region.
