In a significant breakthrough, the Crime Investigation Department of Sparta, in collaboration with the Eurotas Police Department and the assistance of the Nafplio Crime Investigation Unit, has successfully solved five cases of fraud in Laconia.
On the afternoon of June 10, 2026, two local individuals, aged 23 and 47, were arrested in a community within the municipality of Sparta. They are now facing charges for their involvement in a criminal gang that executed these fraudulent schemes, which also includes unidentified accomplices.
The investigation revealed that the suspects posed as tax office employees or accountants, using false pretenses to deceive unsuspecting citizens. They employed various tactics, such as claiming to facilitate the non-payment of fines or the necessity of recording funds for their legalization, to extract money and jewelry from their victims.
From April 26, 2026, to June 9, 2026, the duo committed three confirmed fraud cases and attempted two additional frauds in local communities within the municipalities of Sparta and Eurotas, amassing an illegal financial gain of approximately €61,200 from their criminal activities.
During the searches conducted, authorities seized a total of €5,600 in cash, believed to be proceeds from these illicit acts, as well as a vehicle used in the commission of the crimes.
The arrested individuals are set to be presented before the Public Prosecutor of Laconia, while the investigation continues. The Crime Investigation Department of Sparta is actively pursuing leads to determine any further involvement in similar offenses and to identify their unknown accomplices.
