In a pressing security concern, the condition of the concrete bridge serving as the only road connection to the historic Castle of Monemvasia has come under scrutiny. A recent report highlighted significant damage and erosion affecting the structure, raising alarms about its structural integrity.

The bridge, constructed from reinforced concrete, measures 8.80 meters in length and 7.20 meters in width. Its proximity to the sea has led to extensive corrosion of the reinforcement and detachment of concrete, drastically reducing its load-bearing capacity and making it hazardous for heavy vehicles.

The issue quickly gained political traction. Just two days after the report, on May 20, 2026, the president of the Greek Solution party, Kyriakos Velopoulos, submitted an official inquiry to the Parliament. This inquiry was directed at the relevant ministries of Culture and Interior, seeking immediate updates on the actions that state authorities plan to take regarding the urgent reinforcement or potential replacement of the now-dangerous structure.

In response, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni clarified the responsibilities, shifting the onus onto local government. Despite the bridge’s location within a protected archaeological site, she indicated that the Peloponnese Region is solely responsible for restoration efforts.

In her written response, Mendoni stated:
«The bridge of Monemvasia is situated within the declared archaeological site of Monemvasia and represents the only connection linking the castle town with the Laconian coast and the new settlement ‘Bridge.’ Its current form is the result of extensive interventions from the late 19th century to modern times. The maintenance of the bridge and its structural integrity falls under the jurisdiction of the Peloponnese Region.»

Following this statement, attention has turned to the Peloponnese Regional Governor, Dimitris Ptochos, and his offices, with expectations for immediate announcements regarding when the necessary studies and upgrade works for the bridge will commence.

This situation underscores the critical need for swift action to ensure the safety of this vital connection to Monemvasia, a site of immense historical significance.
