From July 2 to July 5, 2026, the picturesque town of Leonidio welcomed the 14th edition of the Melitzazz festival. Over four vibrant days, the neighborhoods transformed into open cultural spaces, hosting a rich tapestry of events including concerts, exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, storytelling sessions, culinary experiences, activities for children and families, hiking, and discussions. This diverse program approached culture not merely as a spectacle but as a catalyst for connection and the exchange of ideas.

The theme of Melitzazz 2026 was «Communities,» aiming to foster introductions, interactions, and encounters among various groups and communities. This initiative sought to create moments of genuine coexistence and polyphony, ensuring that while differences were acknowledged, everyone had an equal place at the celebration’s table.

### The Communities of Music

At Melitzazz 2026, music emerged as a direct form of communication. The festival kicked off with the Adult Choir of the Municipality of South Kynouria, followed by the harmonious journeys of Asma Cordis and the creative dialogue of JAK Trio. The lyrical offerings of Christina Psycha, the grand traditional feast with the Kinderia, and the modern interpretations by Billie Kark showcased a spectrum of musical styles. Each concert illustrated how harmony is born when diverse voices, sounds, and musical traditions converge in a shared rhythm.

### The Communities of Place and Nature

This year’s theme also unfolded through the very landscape of Leonidio. Hiking activities in collaboration with the Leonidio Climbing and Mountaineering Club and the Cultural and Beautification Association of All Poulithriotes highlighted the connection between communities and their natural surroundings. Educational initiatives led by the Organization for the Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) and activities around the Biosphere Reserve of Mount Parnon – Cape Maleas reminded participants that communities are defined not only by their boundaries but also by their relationship with the shared environment they nurture daily.

### The Communities of Memory

In Leonidio, memory remains vibrant, residing in homes, courtyards, and evolving traditions. The permanent architectural exhibition at the Tsikaloti Tower, the Culture Factory, and the immersion into the Tsakonian language and weaving through guided tours of the Tsakonia Archive highlighted the cultural wealth that continues to be produced and passed down through generations.

### The Communities of Art

Photography and contemporary art became venues for the convergence of people, experiences, and narratives. The photography exhibition «Communities» explored collective memory and the sense of belonging, while the contemporary art exhibition «Encounters,» supported by the NEON Organization for Culture and Development, fostered a fruitful dialogue between three contemporary creators and the local community. Additionally, the Cine–Melitzazz 2026 showcased selected films from the International Short Film Festival of Drama, illustrating the power of cinema to create shared experiences.

### A Community of Global Recognition

A standout moment of this year’s festival was the official ceremony for the inclusion of the Biosphere Reserve of Mount Parnon – Cape Maleas in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This international recognition affirms the unique coexistence of natural environments, culture, and local communities.

The presence of Dr. António de Sousa Abreu, Director of the Ecology and Geosciences Department of UNESCO, lent significant prestige to the festival, emphasizing that the care for a place gains even greater value when recognized as a matter for the entire global community.

### Children: The Future of Communities

Children and families played a special role in this year’s program, bringing life to the streets of Leonidio. Activities ranged from face painting and climbing walls to the children’s performance by the «Strigles» group and educational initiatives by the «Mediterranean Travelers» from OFYPEKA. The festival became a space for play, creativity, and discovery, illustrating that communities are built from an early age as children engage, learn, and share experiences with their families.

As Melitzazz concluded, the communities continued to write their stories. Visitors will reunite on future journeys to South Kynouria, armed with the «Hunt the Stamp» passport, seeking the next stamp and the unspoiled beauty that resides in this unique place.

The «Hunt the Stamp» is an interactive journey exploring the communities of South Kynouria, where visitors seek 15 original artistic stamps, collecting them in a specially designed passport. Each stamp represents a unique artwork and a cherished memory from their visit to the place and its community.

This initiative runs from July 1 to August 30, 2026, and the specially designed passport can be obtained at the offices of the Parnon Development Organization in Leonidio throughout the summer.
