The historic town of Monemvasia and the entire municipality celebrated the 205th anniversary of its liberation, a significant day of remembrance honoring the fighters who sacrificed their lives to free the city from Turkish rule on July 23, 1821. This year, the commemorative events were highlighted by the presence of the naval vessel «Nikiforos» in the harbor, underscoring the importance of this anniversary for a people who must keep their historical memories alive.
The celebrations commenced on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, with traditional dance performances by the Cultural, Dance, and Sports Association of Monemvasia «Rizes,» the Dance Group of the Municipality of Southern Kynouria – Leonidio, the Folklore Center of Tripoli, and the Cultural Association of Vatika. The event was complemented by the adult choir of the «Rizes» Cultural Association, showcasing dances from various regions of Greece and receiving warm applause from the audience for their efforts in passing down traditions to future generations. The Municipal Philharmonic of Monemvasia, under the direction of conductor Fani Ferdianki, added a special touch to the festivities.
On the anniversary itself, July 23, 2026, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was held at the Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa in the Castle, commemorating the first Liturgy performed upon the castle’s surrender to the Greeks, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Efstathios of Monemvasia and Sparta. The day’s speech was delivered by Manolis Stergioulis, a Doctor of Philology, author, and educator.
Following the religious service, officials and attendees gathered at the square of the Holy Christ. There, a memorial service was conducted by the Metropolitan, followed by wreath-laying, a moment of silence in memory of the fallen, and the playing of the National Anthem by the Monemvasia Philharmonic.
The evening culminated in a spectacular display, beginning with the impressive illumination of the iconic Rock of Monemvasia, creating a captivating atmosphere. This was followed by the traditional reenactment of the burning of the Turkish brig by Greek ships, reviving a pivotal naval incident that occurred on July 1, 1821, which significantly influenced the siege’s outcome. The Municipality of Monemvasia organizes this impressive event annually, with crucial support from the Monemvasia Fishing Association «To Laloudi.»
Additionally, the celebrations featured a dazzling drone show that lit up the night sky, forming stunning images and symbols related to Monemvasia and Greece, captivating all attendees. The two-day anniversary events concluded on a melodious note, filled with excitement, with a grand concert by Eleonora Zouganeli, who thrilled the large audience with her performances.
