On the evening of July 31, 2026, the Monemvasia Film Club will host a significant event dedicated to the memories, experiences, and lives of the women of Monemvasia. This gathering will feature the screening of the oral history film titled «Living History – Part II: Women and Life in the Castle.» Scheduled for 21:00 at the courtyard of the Old Primary School of Nomia, this event promises to be a poignant exploration of the past.
The film showcases interviews with women who have lived and shaped the life within the Castle, contributing significantly to the region’s contemporary history. Their oral testimonies, combined with archival photographs, reconstruct the atmosphere of a bygone era, documenting the transformations in life at the Castle—highlighting themes of abandonment, depopulation, the relocation of residents, and the emergence of the Bridge settlement, alongside the new arrivals and returns that revitalized the area.
This film marks the second installment in the oral history series of Monemvasia, created in collaboration with the Monemvasia Society, which also hosts the first part of the series on its website. Directed by Despina Evgenidou, the film draws from the photographic archive of the Monemvasia Society, which has been instrumental in the publication of two books and the organization of three photographic exhibitions, serving as the foundation for the current film’s documentation.
In addition to the film, the event will feature a documentary from the ERT Archive titled «Glimpses of Greek Settlements,» dedicated to the castle town of Monemvasia. This documentary, filmed in 1996, includes many of the individuals featured in «Living History,» providing a unique opportunity to witness their narratives spanning three decades.
Furthermore, attendees will have the chance to view a digital narrative created by fifth-grade students from the Monemvasia Primary School, highlighting the sensitivity, creativity, and skills of the children and their educators.
