On September 8, 2026, a momentous ceremony took place in the historic town of Areopolis, where His Beatitude Theodoros II, the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, was honored as an honorary citizen of the Municipality of Eastern Mani. This event was part of a two-day official visit by the Patriarch to the region, coinciding with the celebration of the Feast of the Virgin Mary, the Healer.
The ceremony was marked by deep respect, emotion, and joy. The Mayor of Eastern Mani, Mr. Petros Andreakos, and the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Mani, Mr. Chrysostomos, addressed the gathering, expressing their honor and delight in welcoming the head of the Alexandrian Church. The Metropolitan described the visit as a historic moment for the area and sought the Patriarch’s blessings for the people of Mani.
In his address, Mayor Andreakos emphasized that the decision made by the Municipal Council was not merely a formal title but a heartfelt tribute and expression of gratitude from the entire local community towards a man of faith, service, and love.
The event also featured a presentation of the Patriarch’s extensive missionary work by His Grace Bishop Prodoros of Toliara and Southern Madagascar. The Patriarch spoke about the historical and ongoing mission of the Alexandrian Patriarchate in Africa, highlighting that their mission extends beyond evangelism to include support for the poor, orphans, and the sick, as well as education, protection of the persecuted, and respect for human dignity, all centered on the love and truth of Christ.
A particularly touching moment occurred when the Patriarch referenced his honorary designation, stating, «Now, along with the Cretan heart, the heart of the Maniot will beat.» This statement encapsulated the profound bond formed with the people of Mani, adding a deeply emotional and symbolic tone to the event.
In a symbolic gesture, the Mayor presented the Patriarch with the golden key to the city and a commemorative plaque depicting the oath of the Maniots. In return, the Patriarch gifted the Mayor the Cross of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the emblem of the Patriarchate to adorn the town hall.
The ceremony continued with a reenactment of the Oath of the Maniots by the Honorary Guard of the Municipality of Eastern Mani. The artistic program included traditional songs performed by the Musical Society of Gytheio, along with a Cretan song from the sister town of Asi Gonia in Chania, honoring the Patriarch’s Cretan heritage. The splendid ceremony concluded with traditional dances performed by the youth group of the Arts and Culture Team of the Municipality of Eastern Mani.
This event not only celebrated the Patriarch’s contributions but also reinforced the enduring ties between the Alexandrian Church and the local community, highlighting a shared commitment to faith, service, and cultural heritage.
