Monemvasia is set to welcome back renowned researcher, choreographer, and teacher of Cretan dances, Giannis Megalakakis, for the second consecutive year. This new cycle of seminars dedicated to the dance, music, and culture of Crete will commence on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 18:00 to 21:00 at the Tourist Pavilion Hall of Monemvasia, generously provided by the Municipality of Monemvasia.
The continuation of these seminars highlights the importance of collaboration among cultural associations, dance instructors, and individuals dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage.
A special mention is warranted for dance instructor Georgia Sourla, who has played a pivotal role in organizing and coordinating these events both last year and this year. According to Megalakakis, her systematic efforts, close cooperation with local cultural associations, and personal commitment to the educational process of dance significantly contribute to the continuation of this vital cultural initiative that unites people and communities through the art of dance.
In this new teaching cycle, participants will have the opportunity to learn dances from all over Crete, improvisations, and figures, while also becoming acquainted with traditional Cretan music, its esteemed artists, the mantinada (a form of Cretan poetry), and the island’s traditional instruments. Most importantly, they will explore ways to express their individuality and soul through movement.
Giannis Megalakakis’s teaching methodology is grounded in over three decades of systematic field research and documentation in Cretan villages, along with his extensive experience in teaching and choreography. The goal is not merely the mechanical learning of steps but a deeper understanding of the relationship between dance, music, humanity, and place.
