A century of life, dedication, and selfless love for the historic fortress town of Monemvasia is celebrated this year by the Association of Monemvasians Worldwide, «The Virgin Mary of Chrysaftis.» Since its establishment in 1926, the association has stood as a vigilant guardian of Monemvasia’s cultural heritage, playing a pivotal role in the preservation of the rock itself from desolation.
The roots of the association trace back even further, to 1918, when Monemvasians in America founded the first organized communities as a link for those who had followed the great wave of migration. During challenging times, this initiative kept the ties to their homeland alive and forged the cohesion of the diaspora.
Subsequently, the association shifted its focus to Greece, even publishing its own newspaper for a time before World War II.
The most critical turning point in the association’s history occurred during the post-war period. In the mid-1950s and early 1960s, Monemvasia faced poverty, neglect from the state, and a mass exodus of its residents. Confronted with the risk of transforming the historic castle into a vast, dead, and uninhabited archaeological site, the association took action. Through coordinated efforts, it succeeded in mobilizing intellectuals, artists, and relevant state authorities. The result was historic: Monemvasia was saved and protected as a vibrant, inhabited town.
Milestones in Its Modern Journey
- 1972: The association reorganized and adopted its current legal form, marking over 50 years of uninterrupted modern operation.
- 1986: A new, dynamic effort for stronger activation was initiated. With the decisive initiative, personal contributions, and resource allocation from the late president, Dimitris Pan. Grafos, the association’s historical newspaper was reissued.
Founders of the Effort
This long journey would not have been possible without the individuals who laid its foundations. Among the key founding members and reformers who left an indelible mark are: G. Sapountzakis, Stavros Kyriako, Konstantinos Angelakis, Nikos Kampourakis, Emmanouil Eleftheroudakis, Eleni Sapountzaki, Maria Markogiannaki, Loula Stellaki, Anastasios Artinios, Panagiotis Kampourakis, Theodoros Delagrammatikas, George Kampourakis, Michalis Stapas, Maria Kafourou, and Alexandros Angelakis.
The Vision for the New Century
In recent decades, as Monemvasia emerged from obscurity and entered a phase of robust development, the association has enhanced its activities in a systematic and modern manner:
- Tourism Promotion: It has taken the lead in campaigns and initiatives to highlight Monemvasia as a premier destination.
- Scientific & Cultural Work: The association successfully organizes conferences, seminars, artistic events, and scientific forums.
- Public Intervention: It advocates for solutions to everyday and institutional problems in the area, supporting the qualitative enhancement of the region.
As it marks 100 years of existence, the Union of Monemvasians Worldwide, «The Virgin Mary of Chrysaftis,» continues to keep the love for its homeland alive. With an eye on the future, it calls upon all Monemvasians and friends of the «Gibraltar of the East» to remain united, safeguarding the history and values of this unique place.
