On October 28, 2026, the historic town of Monemvasia celebrated the national anniversary of October 28, 1940, with remarkable splendor, aided by splendid weather. The day commenced with a traditional service at the Church of Saint Leontios, where attendees gathered to honor the significance of this pivotal moment in Greek history.
Following the service, Evangeline Salata, a teacher from the Monemvasia Primary School, delivered a poignant speech reflecting on the deeper meaning of the sacrifices made by the Greeks in 1940. She emphasized the values and messages that we should all draw from this heroic struggle, reminding the audience of the importance of unity and resilience.
The celebrations continued with a student parade, attended by local authorities, representatives from security forces, and a large crowd. Students from primary, middle, and high schools marched proudly, accompanied by the music of the Municipal Band of Monemvasia. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the decorations adorning the town, as the youth showcased their spirited presence, receiving warm applause from the audience and sending a powerful message of hope and togetherness.
The commemorative events culminated at the Monemvasia Castle, where a memorial service was held in the historic square of the Elkoménos Christos. Official representatives and students laid wreaths in tribute to the fallen heroes. After a moment of silence in honor of those who sacrificed their lives, the solemn ceremony concluded with the playing of the National Anthem, evoking deep emotions among those present.
Once again, the anniversary of «OHI» conveyed a timeless message: «When united, the Greeks can achieve the impossible. They possess the strength to stand tall and say ‘NO’ to anything that threatens their freedom and undermines the values and ideals for which our ancestors gave their lives.»
This celebration not only commemorates a significant historical event but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Greek people, their commitment to freedom, and the importance of unity in facing challenges.
