The Nautical Week 2025 is being celebrated this year from June 29 to July 6. As part of the festivities, there will be a presence of Warships in various ports, allowing the public to visit and explore these impressive vessels.
In Monemvasia, the Missile Boat (TPK) SIMITZOPULOS has been docked since July 1 and will remain until Saturday, July 5. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the deep-rooted connection between Greeks and the sea.
The vessel is named in honor of Ensign Nikolaos Simitzopoulos, who tragically lost his life during the sinking of the A/T VASILISSA OLGA, following an attack by JU-88 aircraft at Lakki, N. Leros, on Sunday, September 26, 1943.
The Hellenic Navy has issued a call for everyone to participate in this tradition that honors those who serve at sea. They emphasize that "the sea is not merely geography for Greece. It embodies our past, present, and future. It is the heart of our culture, the root of our strength, and the mirror of our soul."
This celebration not only pays tribute to maritime heritage but also fosters a sense of community and appreciation for the sacrifices made by those in naval service. As the Nautical Week unfolds, it invites all to reflect on the significance of the sea in shaping Greek identity and culture.
