The Life and Martyrdom of Saint Kyriaki
Saint Kyriaki, a revered figure in Christian history, was born to Dorotheos and Eusebia, a couple who longed for a child. Their prayers were answered when Kyriaki was born on a Sunday, which is reflected in her name, meaning «Sunday» in Greek.
During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian in 282 AD, her parents were captured, tortured, and ultimately executed by the governor Justus. Kyriaki was then brought before Caesar Maximian and subsequently to the governor of Bithynia, Hilarianus. He attempted to persuade her to abandon her faith by emphasizing her beauty, suggesting it was meant for pleasures rather than suffering.
In a powerful response, Kyriaki declared, “I do not value my youth or beauty. The most splendid earthly things are temporary, like flowers and shadows. Today, I may be beautiful, but tomorrow I will be an ugly old woman. Should I make my beauty the center of my life? I have recognized its worth in the wrinkles that await me and in the grave that calls me. Do you think I would commit the monstrous folly of losing eternal brightness to remain a little longer on earth? Therefore, I tell you again, I am and will be a Christian in life and death.”
Infuriated by her defiance, Hilarianus subjected her to severe torture and ordered her beheading. As she prayed, she surrendered her spirit to the Lord before the sword fell.
The memory of Saint Kyriaki is commemorated by the Church on July 7 each year, honoring her unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution.
In addition to her biography, hymns and prayers celebrate her legacy. One such hymn praises her as a virgin martyr who, through her struggles, brought glory to Christ and offered healing to those who honor her. Another hymn expresses a longing for Christ, emphasizing the connection between suffering for Him and the hope of eternal life.
