On July 16, 2025, the Giannis Ritsos Municipal Museum officially opened its doors to the public in the historic castle town of Monemvasia. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of His Eminence Metropolitan Efstathios of Monemvasia and Sparta, alongside the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
The event marked the culmination of a challenging and painstaking effort by the Municipality of Monemvasia and the Ministry of Culture. The home of the renowned poet from Monemvasia has been transformed into a space dedicated to celebrating his life and extraordinary work, which resonates not only within Greece but also across the globe.
During the ceremony, Metropolitan Efstathios expressed his heartfelt joy and gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the museum. He remarked on the emotional weight of inaugurating a space where the poet of «Romiosyni» was born, highlighting Ritsos’s profound connection to Monemvasia. He acknowledged the pivotal roles played by various individuals, particularly Minister Mendoni, for her commitment to preserving and revitalizing historical monuments.
Minister Mendoni, in her address, reflected on the importance of Ritsos’s poetry in shaping the cultural landscape of Greece, particularly for those who grew up during the post-dictatorship era. She expressed her happiness that the Ritsos family home has been transformed into a museum, accessible to both the residents of Monemvasia and countless visitors.
The Mayor of Monemvasia, Iraklis Tricheilis, also spoke, emphasizing the timeless nature of poetry and its impact on society. He acknowledged the contributions of Ritsos and the significance of the museum in honoring the poet’s legacy. The mayor expressed gratitude to Ritsos’s daughter, Eri Ritsou, for her generosity in donating the property for this purpose.
Various dignitaries, including Deputy Minister of National Defense Thanasis Davakis and local officials, shared their thoughts on the museum’s importance as a cultural landmark. They highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the museum a reality and expressed hopes for its role in fostering appreciation for Ritsos’s work and the cultural heritage of the region.
The ceremony concluded with a call for further studies on Ritsos’s religious themes in his poetry, suggesting the potential for the museum to evolve into a center for deeper exploration of his life and works.
