The Prophet Elijah, known affectionately as Saint Elias, holds a significant place in the Old Testament as a revered prophet, celebrated by believers across various faiths. Every year on July 20, communities gather to honor his memory, particularly at the numerous chapels dedicated to him, where festivities abound. These celebrations are especially vibrant in mountainous regions, attracting many pilgrims who come to pay their respects.

Unlike other saints, the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of saints on the day they passed away. However, Elijah’s case is unique; he did not die in the traditional sense. Instead, the day of his commemoration marks his ascension to heaven. According to scripture, he was taken up in a fiery chariot, a moment that signifies his special status. The Apostle Paul notes that Elijah’s ascension was not like that of Jesus, but rather a divine manifestation of his continued existence. For thousands of years, Elijah is believed to have lived on, a mystery that can only be approached through faith.

Elijah’s presence is further affirmed in the New Testament, where he appears during the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, alongside Moses. Prophecies from Malachi and the Gospel of John indicate that Elijah will return before the Second Coming, alongside Enoch, to confront the Antichrist, ultimately facing martyrdom before being resurrected three and a half days later.

Malachi 4:5-6 foretells that God will send Elijah before the Day of the Lord. This anticipation is echoed throughout the New Testament, particularly by John the Baptist, who is described as coming in the spirit and power of Elijah. Elijah’s appearance during the Transfiguration reinforces his prophetic role, as he converses with Jesus and Moses.

Interestingly, the Bible contains passages that suggest Elijah did not ascend to heaven in the conventional sense. In the New Testament, Jesus explicitly states that no one has ascended to heaven except the Son of Man, implying that Elijah is included in this statement. Additionally, an account from the Old Testament describes Elijah sending a letter to King Jehoram of Judah, criticizing his sinful actions, which raises questions about Elijah’s whereabouts post-ascension.

Elijah’s life was marked by numerous miracles, including the miraculous provision of flour and oil for a widow, the resurrection of her son, and the dramatic confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. His prophetic declarations included a three-year drought and the foretelling of the deaths of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.

The highest chapel dedicated to Elijah is located atop Mount Olympus, standing at an impressive 2,803 meters. Built around 1550 by Saint Dionysius, this chapel serves as a pilgrimage site, where a Divine Liturgy is held annually, drawing numerous worshippers.

This exploration of the life and legacy of the Prophet Elijah highlights his enduring significance in religious tradition and the rich tapestry of stories that surround his figure.
