In a significant cultural initiative, the global promotion of the weaving art from the traditional loom of Gerakio took center stage during a meeting held on July 24, 2025. This pivotal gathering between the Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia, Theodoros Veroutis, and the Cultural Association of Geronthron, was hosted at the Administrative Headquarters of the Regional Unit of Laconia. Present at the meeting were key figures from the association, including its President, Anthi Saranti; Vice President, Evangelia Kontogeorgou; and Secretary, Chryssoula Stamatopoulou, together with Sofia Bora, representing the Development Organization OTA «Parnonas A.E.»
One of the primary topics discussed was the progression of the second cycle of lessons in weaving, which has attracted participation from 14 students. This educational program is set to conclude in the first half of September 2025. Additionally, members of the Board proposed various ideas aimed at enhancing the visibility and promotion of Gerakio’s weaving art. Noteworthy suggestions included:
– Establishing a permanent exhibition space dedicated to textiles in Gerakio.
– Promoting weaving as an integral part of cultural tourism activities.
– Developing new educational programs to bolster local employment opportunities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Deputy Regional Governor Veroutis expressed optimism regarding the growing interest in learning the Gerakian weaving art. He remarked on the timeless appeal of this craft, which adeptly blends aesthetics with practicality. Veroutis highlighted that the perpetuation of Gerakian weaving, supported by the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipality of Eurotas, and the Development Organization OTA «Parnonas A.E.,» is yielding tangible outcomes in cultural, tourism, social, and economic domains.
He further emphasized that the Regional Authority remains open to proposals aimed at advancing tradition and culture using contemporary approaches. The collaboration with the Cultural Association of Geronthron is not merely a cultural initiative; it represents a concrete investment in the heritage, local environment, and its people.
This meeting underscores a collective commitment to nurturing and preserving an essential aspect of local identity, ensuring that the art of weaving continues to flourish and inspire future generations.
