On July 31, 2025, the Mayor of Monemvasia, Iraklis Trichilis, made a surprising decision to revoke the position of Deputy Mayor of Culture, Education, and Sports from his long-time collaborator, Panagiota Aleiferis. This unexpected move has raised numerous questions, prompting both parties to provide convincing explanations to the citizens they are obliged to serve for the common good.
In a social media post, Aleiferis elaborated on the reasons behind Trichilis’s decision, criticizing the Mayor for what she described as «highly disrespectful behavior» towards her. According to her statement, the issue arose from her tribute to the recently deceased chief musician of the Monemvasia Municipal District, Giorgos Kalogerakos, during the celebration of Monemvasia’s Liberation Day.
Aleiferis announced her departure from the «UNITY – CREATION» coalition, choosing to continue her role as an independent municipal councilor. She emphasized the inappropriateness of creating divisions in honor of someone who has passed away, calling for respect and silence in memory of an individual who dedicated his life to art and culture.
Such behaviors, as described in her statement, undermine decades of collaboration, reveal a complete lack of communication, and highlight a governance model that appears to be in decline. Actions and attitudes, rather than mere words, define the political landscape.
Elected officials are chosen by the community based on their ability to organize and deliver results, free from ulterior motives and interests. They are entrusted with the responsibility to govern and serve the citizens, retaining the right to step down when their term is complete.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable stagnation and depletion of institutions, with the same individuals holding positions for decades. It may be time for the healthy segment of society to activate and bring forth new faces with vision and ideas for this beautiful region.
Aleiferis’s resignation statement reflects her commitment to dignity and integrity. After 27 years of continuous service in local government, where she has earned the trust of voters as the top municipal councilor since 2010, she expressed her pain over the decision but deemed it necessary. She criticized the Mayor’s unacceptable reprimand regarding her public acknowledgment of Kalogerakos’s contributions.
Her resignation was not merely a withdrawal but a statement of principle, emphasizing that local governance is a service, not a power. She firmly stated that true values are measured by actions and attitudes, not by positions held.
In her heartfelt farewell, Aleiferis expressed gratitude to the municipal employees who have supported the work of the council with professionalism and dedication. She acknowledged the importance of collaboration with those who love their community, stating that her commitment to serving as a free and independent voice for the citizens remains unwavering.
This situation underscores the complexities of local governance and the need for respectful dialogue and collaboration, especially in honoring the legacies of those who have contributed to the cultural fabric of the community.
