In the heart of Laconia, the vibrant spirit of sports and tradition comes alive once again with the upcoming 2025 Penelope Road Race, part of the celebrated «Hyacinth Festival 2025.» This event, which has gained popularity in recent years, is set to return with two exciting routes: the 5th Royal Race covering 11 kilometers and the 2nd Half Marathon Penelope Road Race spanning 20 kilometers. Participants will experience the breathtaking beauty of Taygetus, the exhilarating challenge of an uphill course, and the rich cultural heritage that this historic race embodies.

Organized by the Cultural Center of Lakedaemon, Mnimosyne, and supported by the Spartans Runners and Dimopoulos Coaching, this event promises to be a remarkable gathering for both athletes and spectators.

Event Details:

  • Date: August 30, 2025
  • Location: Georgitsi, Laconia, Spantidou Amphitheater

Race Schedule:

  • 20 km Race Start Time: 18:00
  • 11 km Race Start Time: 18:30

20 km Race Route Description

The race kicks off from the Spantidou Amphitheater, heading towards the village of Pellana along a rural road. At 3.3 km, runners will first encounter asphalt, reaching Pellana at 4.5 km, where the first aid station is located. Participants will then turn right, ascending towards the village of Perivolia (second aid station at 8 km). Continuing on the provincial road from Sparta to Georgitsi, runners will pass through the village of Alefrou at 10.7 km, marking the third aid station. A challenging uphill stretch awaits from 11 to 15 km, leading to the entrance of Georgitsi and the fourth aid station. The course then descends, with runners turning right towards the Spantidou Amphitheater at 16.3 km. The final stretch becomes a dirt road, guiding participants to the finish line at the amphitheater.

This circular route does not require trail shoes, and there will be hydration stations offering water and sports drinks.

11 km Race Route Description

The 11 km race also begins at the Spantidou Amphitheater, descending towards the village of Agios Konstantinos along a steep rural road. At 1.15 km, runners will encounter a stream, followed by a sharp ascent to 2 km (Agios Konstantinos Cemetery). The path continues uphill with minor variations, entering the village at 2.3 km, where participants will turn left onto an asphalt road towards Agoriani.

The uphill journey continues, with a gentle slope leading into Agoriani at around 5 km, where a more pronounced incline awaits. At 5.6 km, runners will turn left towards Georgitsi, following the same route as the Athanatos race until reaching the highest point of the race at 754 meters at 7.5 km. From there, a left turn leads back to the Spantidou Amphitheater, where the descent begins. The final kilometers transition to a dirt road, culminating at the amphitheater.

This route is also circular and does not require trail shoes, with hydration stations available.

The best access route is from Georgitsi. For those coming from Sparta, exit at Pellana. Upon entering Georgitsi, pass the monument with the airplane, and at the exit towards Agoriani, turn right at the Amphitheater sign (visible in the distance).

For travelers from Tripoli or Kalamata, exit at the Lefktro junction towards Sparta, continuing past the tolls to the exit for Logganiko. After passing Agoriani, turn left before entering Georgitsi towards the Amphitheater.

This event promises to be a memorable celebration of athleticism and community spirit, set against the stunning backdrop of Laconia’s landscapes.
