In a heartfelt appeal, the Parents, Guardians, and Friends Association of Individuals with Autism in Laconia, known as «Spectrum of Life,» has reached out to the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, seeking substantial support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. This request comes in light of the ongoing challenges faced by these families, particularly as they navigate the complexities of care and support.
The association’s president, Margarita Spyridakou, emphasizes the relentless struggle that parents of children with autism often endure. She notes that many mothers are compelled to leave their jobs or work part-time to provide constant care for their children. This situation not only affects their professional lives but also leads to emotional and physical exhaustion.
The letter highlights the lack of supportive structures in the region, particularly in Laconia, where families face significant challenges due to the absence of facilities such as Day Centers and Support Centers for Individuals with Disabilities. The association calls for immediate actions to establish these necessary support systems.
In the letter addressed to the Minister, the association reflects on the significance of World Autism Day, which serves as a reminder of the urgent need for social inclusion and support for those on the autism spectrum. The letter underscores the Minister’s previous experience in social affairs and her personal understanding as a mother, which they hope will resonate with her commitment to addressing these pressing issues.
The letter further discusses the inadequacy of the disability benefits provided to families caring for individuals with autism, which often fail to meet even basic living expenses. This financial strain adds to the challenges faced by these families, who frequently find themselves in precarious economic situations.
The association also raises concerns about the disparity in retirement benefits for parents of children with disabilities, highlighting the changes introduced by Law 4336/2015 that established age limits for retirement. This has created a situation where some parents are left working indefinitely as informal caregivers, a role that should ideally be supported by the state.
Despite the introduction of the Personal Assistant for Individuals with Disabilities program in 2022, its implementation has been limited, with only a small number of beneficiaries across Greece. The association points out that while urban centers may have more supportive structures, rural areas like Laconia suffer from a severe lack of resources.
The letter concludes with a respectful request for the Minister to prioritize policies that address the needs of individuals with autism and their families. The association proposes several initiatives, including encouraging municipalities to create support structures, enhancing state facilities, and improving financial aid for families.
By advocating for these changes, the association aims to foster a more inclusive society that recognizes the dignity and rights of individuals with autism and their families. They express hope that with the Minister’s support, meaningful policies can be developed to alleviate the burdens faced by these families and strengthen their trust in the social welfare system.
