In a significant development for maritime education in Greece, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy has announced the names of the successful candidates for the country’s Merchant Marine Academies (A.E.N.). This year, the Merchant Marine Academy of Laconia, located in Neapolis, welcomes 34 new students for the academic year 2026-2027, marking its second year of operation.
Last academic year (2025-2026), the academy enrolled 29 students, of whom 23 successfully completed their first year of studies. Currently, these students are embarking on their inaugural training voyage at sea, with plans to return to the classroom for the next semester’s lessons scheduled for late February 2027.
The smooth operation and gradual increase in enrollment reflect a long-standing demand from the local community of Vatika. The academy not only aims to highlight and continue the rich maritime tradition of the region but also aspires to transform Neapolis into a modern regional center for maritime education. Furthermore, the presence of students and faculty is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, creating new development opportunities for the entire Municipality of Monemvasia.
