In a heartfelt farewell, the Philharmonic of Molai bids adieu to its esteemed conductor, Kostas Kekeris, who retires after an impressive 41-year tenure. This milestone marks the end of a significant chapter filled with emotion and cherished memories, as Kekeris, alongside the young musicians, has tirelessly worked to keep this cultural and educational hub alive.
Members, both past and present, gathered to honor the longest-serving maestro, reminiscing about personal moments and reaffirming Kekeris’s vital role in the cultural landscape of Molai. The Philharmonic was officially established in 1958, a time when Greece was piecing itself back together. This foundation has nurtured at least three generations of musicians, although it remains unclear if it was initially part of the Progressive Association of Molai.
Years of bureaucratic challenges delayed the Philharmonic’s transition to the Municipality of Molai, under Mayor Ioannis Tsangaris. Throughout these years, Kekeris maintained the ensemble with unwavering determination, patience, and a profound love for the children involved.
Among the treasured memories shared were the polishing of brass instruments under the sun and the camaraderie built during excursions, particularly a notable trip in 1988 when they performed the National Anthem for soldiers in Kakavia, near the border with Albania.
Kekeris addressed the youth and their parents, emphasizing the transformative experience of being part of the Philharmonic. He noted that those who have participated never look back with regret, as the ensemble fosters teamwork, competition, and a love for music that enriches both heart and spirit. The community remembers fondly the children who have passed through its ranks, ensuring that the village remains in their hearts.
On the National Anniversary of October 28, 1940, both old and new members played together in a parade, showcasing the enduring spirit of the Philharmonic, which continues to thrive and inspire. The performance resonated with the audience, evoking emotions and optimism.
In closing, a heartfelt thank you is extended to Maestro Kostas Kekeris, alongside the late Giorgos Kalogerakos, for adding a melody to the lives of many.
