As of today, the town of Moláoi mourns a significant loss with the passing of Archimandrite Gerasimos Petrolekas, a steadfast guardian of the community who has traveled to the heavenly kingdom. He was not just a religious leader, but a spiritual beacon and a source of support for many in times of difficulty. His lifetime of dedication to spiritual and social initiatives profoundly impacted the local church and the lives of those he touched.
Archimandrite Gerasimos Petrolekas, aged 67, left behind a deep sadness for all who knew him. He departed from this world on March 26, 2026, leaving behind tangible memories and an indelible legacy that will remain in the hearts of his congregation and community.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Moláoi, presided over by the esteemed Metropolitan Efstathios. The burial will take place at the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos, a significant site in Orthodox Christian tradition.
Gerasimos Petrolekas was born on October 24, 1958, in Charaka, Laconia. He was tonsured as a monk at the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos on October 14, 1975, and later graduated from the evening Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens. He was ordained as a deacon on February 26, 1983, and as a presbyter the following day.
His ministry spanned various parishes, contributing significantly to the Ecclesiastical life in areas such as Ierapetra, Lambokampos, Kyparissia, and Moláoi. He served as the Archpriest and Pastoral Supervisor in Moláoi and participated actively in the local ecclesiastical community until December 2019.
In a demonstration of his enduring connections, he later served in the Holy Metropolis of Limnos from January 1, 2020, to September 30, 2022, assisting the new bishop during a crucial period. Gerasimos returned to Moláoi on October 1, 2022, where he resumed leadership of the parish while also caring for the community of Charaka.
The efforts of Archimandrite Gerasimos have not gone unnoticed. He was honored with numerous titles, including Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne, conferred by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on December 3, 2024, highlighting his lifelong devotion and impactful service within the church.
His legacy will continue to inspire, woven into the fabric of Moláoi and the wider community.
