On July 19, 2025, the Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, conducted an on-site inspection of significant roadworks in Laconia. Accompanied by key officials, including the Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia, Theodoros Veroutis, and other technical service representatives, Ptochos aimed to monitor the progress of these vital projects and ensure that work is proceeding at a satisfactory pace.
During the visit, Ptochos observed the advancement of crucial infrastructure projects that are essential for road safety, connecting local communities, and promoting tourism in the region.
### New Bridge over the Eurotas River
One of the highlighted projects is the construction of a new bridge over the Eurotas River, with a budget of €4,465,000. This new structure will be built near the existing metal bridge, along with the necessary access roads. According to updates from the contractor’s representative, the construction of the bridge’s framework is progressing smoothly and is expected to be completed by early September. Following this, work will commence on the connecting roads that will link the new bridge to the national road network.
Governor Ptochos emphasized the importance of this bridge, stating, «The bridge over the Eurotas represents a significant infrastructure project that addresses a long-standing issue for Laconia. We visited the construction site today to ensure that everything is on track. Our goal is clear: to replace the old metal bridge, which has exceeded its functional lifespan, with a modern and safe structure. We are closely monitoring progress and working methodically to ensure the new bridge is delivered to the public on time.»
### Improvement of National Road from Apidia Junction to Molai
Another critical project is the improvement and construction of the National Road from the Apidia junction to Molai, with a budget of €6,500,000. This initiative aims to modernize a crucial section of the roadway leading to Monemvasia, enhancing connectivity in eastern Laconia.
### Enhancement of the Provincial Road from Gytheio to Areopoli
The second phase of the improvement of the provincial road from Gytheio to Areopoli and Gerolimenas, budgeted at €6,600,000, includes upgrades and modernization of road segments, new geometric and technical specifications, the construction of junctions, and safety measures. This route serves not only local residents but also thousands of visitors to Mani.
At both construction sites, Governor Ptochos stressed the importance of adhering to timelines and strict technical specifications. He highlighted that roadworks should not be viewed as isolated interventions but as critical links in a cohesive and safe road network. He also underscored the need for continuous oversight and close collaboration with technical services to ensure that these projects are completed with quality and delivered on time to residents and visitors alike.
