The Municipality of Eurotas has issued a response to a recent article from notospress.gr concerning the management of flood damage in Vrontamas. The article highlighted the urgent need for the restoration of the Xerias Bridge on the Vrontamas – Lefkochoma road, which was severely damaged due to flooding caused by intense weather events on January 26, 2023.
Mayor of Eurotas, Dimos Verdos, provided accurate information regarding funding in an effort to clarify the situation surrounding a project that he emphasized is "not simple, cannot be fixed with quick patches or mere words, but requires studies, approvals, and funding."
In the municipality’s statement, they expressed surprise and disappointment at the notospress article, which they claimed perpetuated inaccuracies and created misleading impressions, undermining the efforts being made in a challenging situation.
The municipality clarified that the reported funding amounts of €1,700,000 and €700,000 for Vrontamas are false, stating they do not know the origin of these figures. The initial amount requested from the Ministry of Interior by the Municipality of Eurotas, according to the submitted Technical Report, was €2,700,000 for the following communities: Gramousas, Gerakio, Vrontamas, Karitsa, Myrtia, Asterio, and Krokees.
The Eurotas Municipal Authority emphasized that they are actively engaged in the process, having been the first to inform, advocate, and collaborate with relevant ministries and the regional government to find a substantial solution to the problem. They highlighted specific requests submitted to secure the total funding of €2,700,000, referencing documents sent to the relevant ministries and the regional government for the allocation and restoration of damages.
The total final funding from the Ministry of Interior amounts to €700,000, which has been allocated to the communities according to the Technical Report, and the Municipal Committee has already initiated the preparation of bidding terms.
Additionally, the transfer of a military unit was carried out following coordinated efforts by the Municipality in collaboration with Deputy Minister Mr. Th. Davakis.
The municipality reiterated that the required project is complex and cannot be addressed with superficial solutions or mere rhetoric. It demands careful planning, approvals, and funding—hence their commitment to working methodically and seriously. They criticized populism and sensational headlines, asserting that they do not benefit the citizens.
The Municipality of Eurotas called on notospress to adhere to basic journalistic standards and verify information before publishing insinuations, inaccuracies, and incomplete attributions of responsibility.
They welcomed anyone willing to contribute to a genuine solution but warned that those seeking to exploit the issue for sensationalism would face the truth and the facts.
