On January 6, 2026, the historic town of Monemvasia celebrated the Feast of Theophany with remarkable splendor. The day began at the Holy Church of Saint Leontius, where the morning services included the Orthros, the Divine Liturgy, and the Great Blessing of the Waters, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Efstathios of Monemvasia and Sparta.
During his address, the esteemed Bishop highlighted the significant event of the Baptism of Christ, emphasizing the humility with which the Lord approached this momentous occasion. He conveyed a message of obedience and sinlessness, encouraging the congregation to seek divine guidance in their thoughts and actions.
Following the church services, the sacred assembly, accompanied by the Municipal Philharmonic, proceeded to the location known as «Plaka» for the ceremonial blessing of the waters and the immersion of the Holy Cross. As is tradition, many young individuals bravely plunged into the icy waters in pursuit of the Cross, demonstrating their faith and commitment to this cherished custom.
Adding a unique touch to the celebrations, George Isaacidis, along with young students, released 30 doves into the sky, symbolizing peace and hope.
The event was attended by local administrative officials, including Deputy Mayor Stavros Christakos, Community President Panagiotis Grafos, and Councilor Charalampos Sofos, along with Municipal Councilors Nikolaos Vlachos and Vasileios Koulouvakos. Also present were the commanders of the local police and coast guard, ensuring a safe and orderly celebration.
This vibrant celebration not only honored a significant religious event but also fostered community spirit and unity among the residents of Monemvasia. The images captured during the festivities reflect the joy and reverence shared by all participants, marking another successful observance of Theophany in this picturesque town.
