The historic town of Monemvasia recently celebrated the 204th anniversary of its liberation from Turkish rule, marking a significant day of remembrance for the brave fighters who sacrificed their lives during this pivotal moment on July 23, 1821. This year’s commemoration was particularly vibrant, highlighted by the presence of the Hellenic Navy missile boat «Vlachakos,» which docked in Monemvasia’s harbor for three days.
The festivities commenced on July 22, 2025, with traditional dance performances showcasing the cultural richness of Greece. Various local cultural and athletic associations participated, including «Oi Rizes» of Monemvasia, the dance group from Sparta «I Pyrichii,» the «Korinthian Hearth of Historical and Folkloric Research,» and the ethnographic association «O Thireatis» from Astros.
The following day, July 23, began with an Archpriest Divine Liturgy at the Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, reminiscent of the ceremony held during the fortress’s handover to the Greeks. The service was led by His Eminence Metropolitan Efstathios of Monemvasia and Sparta, followed by a commemorative speech delivered by archaeologist Nektarios Skagos. A memorial service was also conducted by the Metropolitan to honor those who fell during the liberation.
The celebrations continued in the square of the Enthroned Christ, where wreaths were laid, a moment of silence was observed in memory of the fallen, and the National Anthem was performed by the Neapolis Philharmonic. In the evening, attendees witnessed a reenactment of the burning of a Turkish brigantine by Greek ships, a significant naval episode that took place on July 1, 1821, influencing the siege’s progression. The municipality has made concerted efforts to maintain this historical memory, with support from the Monemvasia Fishing Association «To Laloudi.»
The anniversary festivities culminated in a concert by Melina Aslanidou, accompanied by a talented ensemble of musicians, captivating an audience in a city that radiated an extra charm.
Notable attendees included the Mayor of Monemvasia, Iraklis Trichilis; Laconia MP Neoklis Kritikos; President of the Monemvasia Community Panagiotis Grafos; and several local councilors and dignitaries. The event also welcomed commanders from local police and coast guard authorities, as well as various representatives from community organizations.
The organizing committee has been commended for their exemplary arrangements for the two-day event, which conveyed the message that the anniversary of Monemvasia’s liberation holds a unique and paramount significance. The local community is urged to collectively enhance and renew these anniversary celebrations, ensuring they continue to reflect this important historical event for both Monemvasia and all of Greece.
