On March 25, 2026, the historic city of Monemvasia celebrated the national anniversary of March 25, 1821, with great splendor and the participation of a large crowd. The festivities commenced at the Monemvasia Castle and the Church of Panagia Chrysafitissa, where the morning service and Divine Liturgy were held. Following the religious ceremonies, a doxology was chanted in the presence of local authorities, students from primary and secondary schools, and the devoted public.
The day’s celebrations featured a speech delivered by Mr. Dimitrios Theodorakakos, a philologist from the General Lyceum of Monemvasia, who articulated the significance of the occasion. The event continued with clergy and citizens moving to the square of the Christ of the Elkomenos, where a memorial service was conducted, and wreaths were laid in honor of those who fought for Greece’s independence. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem performed by the Municipal Band of Monemvasia.
In the new town, in the community of Gefyra, a beautifully decorated area hosted a parade featuring students from the local elementary school, middle school, and high school, along with the cultural association «The Roots.» The atmosphere was vibrant, enhanced by the sounds of the band.
The celebrations wrapped up with a presentation of traditional dances by the dance groups of the Monemvasia Cultural Association «The Roots» in the central square, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
This event not only commemorated a pivotal moment in Greek history but also fostered community spirit and pride, bringing together people of all ages in a shared celebration of their national identity.
