In a significant political shift within the Municipality of Monemvasia, Deputy Mayor of Voion, Sofia Doumani, announced her resignation from both her deputy mayoral duties and her position as a municipal councilor. This announcement was made via social media, marking a pivotal moment in local governance.
In her official letter addressed to the Mayor and the President of the Municipal Council, Doumani articulated her reasons for stepping down, hinting at the current challenges facing local government. She cited health issues as a contributing factor to her decision, emphasizing the need to distance herself from what she described as a toxic environment.
Doumani stated, “No position is worth more than our self-respect.” She expressed her deeply rooted beliefs regarding the functioning of local governance, noting that the democracy within it is increasingly constrained by the new Code currently in effect. Her health struggles, combined with the prevailing political climate, made it untenable for her to continue in her role.
In a poignant conclusion to her letter, she remarked, “No position of responsibility and no remuneration is worth more than our health, peace, self-respect, and dignity.” Doumani confirmed her intention to return solely to her professional responsibilities.
In a gesture aimed at facilitating the continuity of the municipal administration, Doumani chose to relinquish her council seat as well, allowing for her immediate replacement by the next eligible candidate. This decision aims to ensure a smooth transition and the uninterrupted functioning of the municipal authority for the remaining two years of its term.
As she concluded her letter, the outgoing Deputy Mayor expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Mayor for his trust, to her constituents for their support, and to all the employees of the Municipality of Monemvasia—especially those in the Voion Municipal Unit—for their excellent collaboration throughout her tenure.
This resignation marks a notable moment in the local political landscape, reflecting broader issues within municipal governance and the personal toll such roles can take on individuals.
