A new financial initiative amounting to 4 million euros has been launched by the Peloponnese Region, aimed at combating child poverty. This initiative, announced by the Regional Governor Dimitris Ptochos, is directed towards the municipalities within the region and is funded by the European Social Fund+ (ESF+), as part of the «Peloponnese» Program for 2021–2027. The primary objective is to provide immediate support to 1,000 minors and their families who are in situations of social and economic vulnerability.
The intervention specifically targets children under the age of 18 who are at risk of exclusion, with a particular focus on those with disabilities or mental health issues, Roma children, children from migrant backgrounds, as well as those living in institutions or precarious housing conditions.
Through collaboration between municipalities, social services, schools, and health facilities, local child protection networks will be established to promptly identify needs. The funded actions are practical in nature and include:
- Psychological and social support / family counseling.
- Speech therapy, occupational therapy, and medical care.
- Educational support (social tutoring, foreign languages).
- Participation in activities (sports, music, dance) and provision of vouchers for specialized services.
Governor Dimitris Ptochos stated, «We invest where social policy gains real substance in the daily lives of children. Our goal is to create a stronger local safety net so that every child in need can find timely support and equal opportunities.»
This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of child poverty in the region, ensuring that vulnerable children receive the necessary support to thrive and succeed.
