In a troubling incident that highlights the vulnerability of the elderly, a woman in the Neapolis area of Voians fell victim to a fraudulent scheme. On the morning of Saturday, July 19, 2025, an unknown perpetrator posed as a doctor and contacted the elderly woman, convincing her that a relative had been injured.
Under the guise of urgency, the scammer persuaded her to hand over a significant sum of money to an unidentified man, claiming it was needed for immediate medical intervention. This alarming tactic is part of a broader trend where scammers exploit the trust and concern of elderly individuals, often leading to devastating financial losses.
Following a thorough investigation by the Voians Police Department, authorities identified the individual who collected the money as a 45-year-old foreign national. In a swift response, police apprehended him the following day, Sunday, July 20, 2025, in the early hours, along with a 43-year-old accomplice in Megara.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and awareness among the elderly and their families. As scams targeting older adults continue to rise, it is crucial to foster open communication about potential threats and encourage reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities.
