On the evening of July 25, 2026, at 21:00, a captivating event dedicated to the history, archaeology, and enduring identity of the region will take place at the Nikos Kazantzakis Cultural Center in Stoupa. This initiative is organized by the Cultural Association for Art & Nature, NARTURA, as part of the Cultural Summer events hosted by the Municipality of Western Mani.
Dr. Sofia Germanidou, an esteemed archaeologist and art historian with extensive research experience, will guide attendees on a journey from antiquity to the present. Through the exploration of monuments, archaeological finds, and the unique cultural landscape of the area, she aims to address thought-provoking questions such as:
- How does the natural landscape connect with the archaeology of a place?
- In what ways does the landscape preserve traces of human presence over the centuries?
- How does this relationship ultimately shape the history of the region?
The event promises a rich historical narrative, tracing the path from the ancient settlement of Lefktro and the Byzantine church known as the «matchbox,» to the Castle of Villehardouin and the mountains of the Slavs. Attendees will learn about the traditional practices of linen processing along the coastline and the lignite mine associated with Nikos Kazantzakis and Giorgis Zorbas, with the spirit of Galatea Kazantzakis and Angelos Sikelianos accompanying them.
Dr. Germanidou will lead the audience through an engaging exploration where nature, history, and humanity intertwine, presenting the local heritage in a clear and meaningful manner.
The evening will be coordinated by Agisilaos I. Theodorakis, a member of NARTURA, who has taken the initiative to bring this event to life.
Additionally, the talk will be complemented by a small interactive exhibition of agricultural tools, prominently featuring the renowned maggano. These items are generously loaned by the Folklore Museum of Platsa specifically for this occasion.
