The cultural hub «Kymothoi» once again served as a vibrant meeting point for international artistic expression. This year, it took part in the innovative artist residency program organized by Between the Seas: Mediterranean Performing Arts, held in Monemvasia from June 20 to July 12, 2026.
«This initiative, spearheaded by Akina Stathaki, provided us with a unique opportunity to connect and engage with creators from around the globe,» commented Maria Zervou, the owner of Kymothoi. She further emphasized the value of this event in allowing attendees to discover contemporary works and closely observe the creative journey—from initial conception to eventual execution.
This year’s program was dedicated to contemporary Balkan dramaturgy, showcasing two distinct theatrical events at Kymothoi:
Friday, July 10 – Theater Workshop: An exceptional group of women, aged 19 to 70—daughters, mothers, grandmothers, partners, workers, creators, and cat lovers, both biological and stepfamily—read the play by Janna Milovoyević titled «We Are Afraid. We Are Learning to Count.» They conducted theatrical exercises on the themes of the work, which sparked deep reflection, discussion, and shared anxieties, along with profound faith. A heartfelt acknowledgment was given to Jana, Ariana, Maria, Fotini, Sofia, Konstantina, Chryso, Chrysoyla, Myrto, and Kalliopi.
Saturday, July 11 – Theatrical Reading: The psychedelic-surreal journey of Armin Berhem, titled «11 Minutes in Space,» was presented, translated and directed by Akina Stathaki. The performance featured Arianna Chatzigalanou, with Fotini Karagianni on the decks. Following the presentation, there was a warm and constructive discussion with the audience.
This event not only highlighted the creativity flourishing in the Balkans but also emphasized the importance of community engagement in the arts, showcasing how shared experiences can lead to meaningful conversations and connections across diverse backgrounds.
