On July 24, 2025, a significant meeting took place at the Administrative Center of Laconia, focusing on the global promotion and visibility of the weaving art of the traditional loom in Geraki. The meeting was led by the Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia, Theodoros Veroutis, and included key members of the Geronthron Cultural Association, such as President Anthi Saranti, Vice President Evangelia Kontogeorgou, and Secretary Chrysoula Stamatopoulou. Also present was Sofia Bora, representing the Development Organization of Local Authorities «Parnonas A.E.»
During this gathering, various topics were discussed, particularly the progress of the second cycle of weaving art instruction, which currently involves 14 students and is expected to conclude in the first half of September. The board members proposed several initiatives aimed at enhancing the promotion and visibility of this traditional craft, including:
– Establishing a permanent exhibition space for woven items in Geraki.
– Promoting the weaving art through cultural tourism activities.
– Developing new educational programs to bolster local employment.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Deputy Regional Governor Theodoros Veroutis expressed his satisfaction with the growing interest in learning the Geraki weaving art, a timeless craft that beautifully merges aesthetics with functionality. He emphasized that the preservation of Geraki’s weaving tradition, supported by the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipality of Eurotas, and the Development Organization «Parnonas A.E.,» is yielding tangible results in cultural, tourism, social, and economic spheres.
Veroutis stated, «As a Regional Authority, we are always open to proposals that seek to promote our tradition and culture through modern methods, and we are eager to contribute to their realization. Our collaboration with the Geronthron Cultural Association is not merely a cultural initiative; it is a tangible investment in our heritage, our region, and our people.»
